March 2026
Heavy refers to vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeding 3,500 kg - including buses (and minibuses), trucks, vans, and motorhomes. Agricultural machinery and other mobile equipment are excluded.
How many heavy vehicles are we seeing each month?
Trucks remain the backbone at ~49-60% share, though that's well down from the 62-75% range seen in early 2024. Motorhomes have Oct-Nov spikes (38-44% share) in both 2024 and 2025 suggest a clear seasonal registration pattern, likely end-of-year fleet or tourism-related batching. Buses and Vans hold steady in the 5-15% band.
The drop in truck registrations is driving an overall decline in the sector.
Which heavy vehicle types dominate month to month?
The bus category encompasses both traditional large service coaches and smaller minibuses. Utility vehicles include a limited number of utes with a GVM above 3,500 kg (and are marked as commercial), and the “Other” fuel type represents a very small number of fuel cell vehicles.
There are a small number of vehicles not shown here that are 'passenger' vehicles but have had a GVM that's tipped over 3,500 kg.
